small beginnings with awk, sed, cut

great things start with small beginnings. i don’t go to perl or python right away if awk or sed can do the job. blindly doing small stuff with perl or python and ignoring what is commonly available out there (awk, sed, m4, cut, grep etc) is lame. strike a correct balance in switching between languages.
