I originally started with ArchLinux so I could test out the idea for ArtisinalWS and not worry about hand rolling the software. Arch supports a mega ton of modern software, but it’s also fairly huge for a VM based OS. Alpine is very tiny by comparison, and also runs almost no heavy services so it’s memory footprint is also lower. Here’s me starting up, shrinking, and decompressing an Alpine Linux base VM.
