CI/CD-based (.gitlab-ci.yml file) security pipeline. For testing purpose, two example applications are used:
- A Python web service implemented with Flask.
- A C application containing deliberate security flaws.
The pipeline follows a defense-in-depth approach across three phases:
- Development Security: secret detection (GitLab Secret Detection, KICS, Semgrep), SAST (Semgrep, KICS, GCC Static Analyzer), DAST (OWASP ZAP), sanitizer-based testing (ASan, UBSan), and fuzzing (AFL++).
- Software Supply Chain Security: artifact signing and verification (OpenSSL, Cosign), container image scanning (Trivy), and immutable image pinning through SHA256 digests.
- Runtime Security: testing of WAF protection (ModSecurity + OWASP CRS), RASP protection (PyRASP), combined WAF+RASP deployments, and C binary hardening through modern GCC security mitigations.
The effectiveness of the controls is validated using:
- simulated attacks to evaluate detection and blocking capabilities (false negatives)
- and legitimate use cases to verify that security controls do not incorrectly block normal behavior (false positives)
